Not really. The story in Half-Life 2 is so different. A different time, a different location, different enemies If Half-Life 1 never existed, Half-Life 2 would still be a great game and story. If you play Half-Life 2 then the episodes are worth going through as they immediately follow events from the main game.
of course it is. hl2 is a sequel. and btw hl1 is a good game too. Personally, I played Half Life 2 long before I played HL1 (still haven't beat Half-Life 1 or Black Mesa, though I've gotten pretty damn close) to be honest, just play whichever ones interest you in the order you want to.

When Valve announced they were rereleasing Half Life 1 on the Source engine, everyone thought they were remaking Half Life 1 with Half Life 2 graphics and physics. All they did was enhance the physics, and still left the graphics in their original state. Black Mesa: Source is a remake of Half Life 1 with current day graphics and physics.

I have a few game systems and I tend to build my collection mainly around gathering all games that scored 80+ on Metacritic. That is how I came across Half Life 2 (via The Orange Box) on PS3. After a deep-into-the-night-play session I have some questions/thoughts. Be interested to hear any of your thoughts! This game still holds up I think.
